This one is going to be quick.
Physical Science: We spent the hour today talking about SI units, and how to take proper measurements. I redid this portion of my Science Skills unit, to spend more time taking measurements and working on unit conversions. Today the kids will do the same measurement activity from last week, but using actual metric scales. Well paper ones anyways. You can find links to the documents here and here.

Chemistry: After spending a week talking about mass, and then another dealing with volume and measurements, we started the mass and volume lab. Students were given a set of metals bars, all of the same material of course, and then had to measure the mass and volume of each.
Preliminary results for some groups show a lack of being able to take good measurements. After practicing how to read scales and take proper measurements, we shouldn’t be getting y proportional to x^2 relationships for this experiment.
Physics of Light: Yesterday we began the Light Intensity Lab. Measurements got rushed towards the end of the hour (thanks Fire Drill) so we will be doing a bit of triage today. I’ll have more to say about this later.
*Updated* So I took some pictures of the setup we used to collect data for our Light Intensity Lab. It involves using a Mini-Maglight with the cap off for the source, and a Vernier Light Sensor to get the illumination. The measurements are in Lux, which from what I read means were talking about the Luminous Intensity, or amount of light that is detectable by the eye.

The kids surround their work space with white boards to help keep light from other groups from interfering with the results. The teacher notes from ASU (this is a modeling lab) also suggest putting a small piece of rolled up black paper over the end of the sensor to also block out light. We did this, but in trials that I did by myself, it wasn’t necessary as long as other light is being blocked out by the barriers.
